Early diagnosis of breast cancer is possible with screening tests. Screening tests may not always give accurate results. Additional examinations and tests may be needed in people in the risk group.

Screening tests that can be used for early detection of breast cancer include:

  • Breast self-exam :

Most of the patients diagnosed with breast cancer noticed a mass in the breast and applied to the doctor. For this reason, it is recommended that all women who do not have any complaints should examine their own breasts once a month. This should be taught to women by the healthcare team. After the end of menstruation, it is extremely important for women to examine their own breasts in front of the mirror in order to detect possible masses early.

Breast self-exam begins with examining the appearance of the breast. The hands are placed on the waist, the difference in the breasts, swelling, collapse of the nipples or skin is checked. Then the breast tissue is thoroughly examined with the fingers. Starting from the outer parts and looking towards the middle, all sides are looked at. Is there an audience? Is there a sore spot? Finally, the armpit and upper clavicle are checked. The swelling is examined for the presence of a palpable mass. Both breasts and armpits are evaluated above the clavicle.

With this procedure, which does not take five minutes once a month, breast cancer can be detected early. In the presence of a suspected mass, it is necessary to consult a specialist.

  • Mammography:

It is the imaging of the breast tissue using low-dose x-rays. It may not look very perfect. Recently, much better quality images can be obtained with three-dimensional mammography devices. It is recommended that women aged 40-69 should have a mammography test every two years. It is recommended once a year after the age of 30 in the high-risk group.
