How is Ventolin used?
Ventolin inhaler is a drug containing 100 micrograms of salbutamol active ingredient. Salbutamol is an active ingredient from the group of selective beta2 adrenergic receptor agonists, and it expands the airways in the lungs, allowing you to breathe more easily.
It is a metered dose device specially designed for the controlled release of the drug in the Ventolin inhaler. A can can be sprayed 200 times and each spray releases 100 micrograms of salbutamol into the lungs.
Salbutamol is a reliever drug used especially to reduce asthma symptoms. However, it is not used regularly to control asthma.
Salbutamol is used for short-term (4 hours) expansion of the bronchi with its quick-onset effect in asthma attacks, airway obstructions such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema. Its effect lasts approximately 4 hours. Apart from an asthma attack, if your doctor recommends it, it can also be used to prevent symptoms in conditions known to cause an asthma attack, such as exercise and exposure to allergens. It is also used to reduce symptoms in some chronic obstructive pulmonary patients. It is not preferred in regular treatment.
First of all, it should be known that Ventolin or its derivative drugs are only prescribed for the person himself and are not suitable for anyone else to use. Otherwise, it may harm that person.
The patient who has been prescribed a Ventolin inhaler should not change the dose other than the dose that has been reported to him. Do not use below or above the recommended dose.
Things to consider when using Ventolin:
- Ventolin is not used to prevent preterm labor or the threat of miscarriage.
- Do not use if you are allergic to salbutamol or other substances in Ventolin. If you do not get relief or your complaints increase despite using Ventolin, consult your doctor. While this may indicate that you have allergies, it may also indicate that your asthma control is getting worse.
- If there is an irregularity or increase in your thyroid hormones, you should definitely inform your doctor.
- If you have high blood pressure, tell your doctor before using Ventolin or when you notice it.
- If your relaxation time has been shortened after using Ventolin compared to your previous use, inform your doctor.
- If you have any heart disease or if you have developed discomfort while using Ventolin, be sure to inform your doctor.
- Inform your doctor if your blood potassium level has decreased while using Ventolin.
- Use Ventolin if it is prescribed because you need to use it during pregnancy. If you realize that you are pregnant while using Ventolin, inform your doctor again.
- Ventolin is a drug that passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding and your doctor has prescribed Ventolin, use it. If Ventolin treatment is recommended, be sure to inform your doctor that you are breastfeeding.
- Do not use Ventolin together with other drugs at your own discretion. Before the treatment, tell your doctor exactly the drugs you are using.
How is Ventolin used?
If it’s your first time opening the Ventolin can, you’ll see an upside-down tube inside a plastic enclosure and a cap on the short arm. The tube that appears is the part where your medicine is located. The bottom of the tube is mounted inside, visible at the top. First remove the cover on the short arm. Press firmly on the tube once and see air blast from the mouth on the short side. This is a test that shows your medicine is working and there are no problems.
If you have used Ventolin before and have taken a break for a while (eg 5 days), shake the can well. Press the top twice to make sure the medicine is working and spray it into the cavity.
Each puff you inhale with your mouth while using Ventolin is referred to as an inhalation.
While using Ventolin, in adult patients over 12 years of age:
1 or 2 inhalations during an asthma attack,
If it will be used as a precaution in risky situations to prevent asthma, 2 inhalations can be used 10-15 minutes before exposure.
The number of Ventolin inhalations should not exceed 8 inhalations per 24 hours. Do not increase the dose yourself. In case of insufficiency, consult your doctor.
Follow your doctor’s recommendations for use in children under 12 years of age.
How is Ventolin inhalation done?
If you are in crisis periods when you need to use Ventolin, try to stay calm as much as possible.
- Take your time.
- First, remove the cap on the short arm of the medicine and check if it is clean.
- Shake the can well.
- Hold the can upright with the mouthpiece facing you. Hold it towards your mouth with your index finger pointing towards the top.
- Exhale without forcing before placing the mouthpiece in your mouth. Try to give all the air you can outside.
- Before you breathe again, place the mouthpiece between your teeth and close it tightly with your lips.
- Do not breathe through your nose. As soon as you step on the top of the vent, just breathe in calmly and deeply through your mouth and inhale all the air. While doing this, make sure that your lips are completely closed and that you are not breathing through your nose.
- Hold your breath for as long as you can. Move the device away from your mouth and relax.
- If you need to use it again, wait 30 seconds and repeat the same steps.
- Clean the mouth of your medicine and close the cap tightly.
- If you are going to use it for the first time, practice in front of the mirror a few times before you start.
- If you see mist coming out of the top or sides when you pull or press the medicine, start over and do it again. Before repeating, check that the tube is firmly seated.
If you are going to use it on your child, encourage him first. If he cannot do the pressing of the tube himself, do it yourself. Educate and encourage him.
For children under 5 years of age, you may need to use Ventolini with a Volumatic spacer or Babyhaler device. Please consult your physician before such applications.
